LACOSTE™ Products - The Facts
By: John Fairheart - FraudWatchers.org
December 29th, 2007

There have been may questions raised about the authenticity of various "online stores". Many of these so-called stores contain products which are set at very attractive prices. Unfortunately, many of these sites are simply out to steal your money or send you fake and counterfeit goods.

Whilst there are many different products available, there is one (so far) that we can easily identify with and state with a 100% guarantee whether a website is genuine or not. The product in question is the LACOSTE brand.

Our first encounter with specific questions concerning LACOSTE appeared [here] in December 2006 and we have been seeing quite a few since then. One question in particular caught our eye [here] and we decided to investigate further. The main reason for this was because a website appeared which was carrying the name of Lacoste itself in the domain name, a sure sign of an illegal website [lacostewholesalers.com].

I volunteered and looked at the official Lacoste website [lacoste.com] and viewed their legal notices. It became very obvious that LACOSTE distribution is very strictly controlled. Here is the information from the website (circa January 2007):-

Quote:
LACOSTE products are sold through a network of authorized outlets, including LACOSTE Retailers, Boutiques and Corners. These products are not distributed over the Internet network. Any purchase made over the Internet network is made at the risk and peril of the buyer, notably insofar as concerns the authenticity of said products.
So in summary, if you see an online store which appears to be a legitimate business (wholesale/retail) and said store sells LACOSTE products, you can guarantee that the website is a fraud and as such you should report it and never deal with them. It does not matter what other products they are selling, if they sell LACOSTE then they are frauds.

Please note that this warning does not extend to websites such as eBay and other onling 'auction/sales' sites, as they are not the same as a solitary online-store. However, due dilligence should still be employed to protect yourself from fraudulent sales.

Please be wary.

Update (March 7th, 2008)
Quote:
Lacoste S.A. has for many years actively pursued the defence of its intellectual property rights.

Each year, Lacoste S.A. devotes almost 3.5 million euros to combating global fraud. A team of specialist legal experts, assigned specifically to this task, is responsible for registering the trademarks, protecting them against pirate registrations, monitoring markets and, finally, undertaking action locally and before the courts to bring counterfeiters to justice. In this respect, Lacoste S.A. works closely with police, customs, government departments and the legal authorities in each country where it operates. With the assistance of national and international professional associations, it is also involved in training and awareness campaigns to inform governments and consumers.

Further, to protect consumers and guarantee that they are buying the genuine article, it has implemented selective distribution systems for all products sold under its name.

John Fairheart
