Arrow Kofi Annan

Kofi Annan – The fact, the fiction and the scam.

1. The Facts

Kofi Annan is the Secretary-General of the United Nations. He is from Ghana and will complete his second term in office in December 2006. There are times when the scammers use real names to fuel the storyline of their scams and this is one of them. In December 2004, reports surfaced that Kofi Annan's son Kojo Annan received payments from the Swiss company Cotecna Inspection SA that won a contract under the UN Oil for Food program. Kojo Annan was an employee of the company. The final report of the Independent Inquiry Committee investigating the matter cleared both men of any illegal actions. However, this is being used as fuel for the scammers.

2. The Fiction

Quote:
I Dr. Kofi Annan, Secretary-General of the United Nations, would like to ask your partnership in reprofilling funds over $250m in excess, the funds would be coming via a string of selected banks in Europe and Asia. The Funds in question were generated by me during the oil for food program in Iraq. I have been getting scandals/ controversy in this regards, you can read more on the links below-
One of the links given has this at the top of the page linked to -

A link to this article is being spamvertised in what is called a "419 spam" alleging to be an email from UN Secretary Kofi Annan. The World Socialist Web Site has no responsibility for this email and does not endorse the use of links to our articles in spam.
The real Kofi Annan is actually a pretty busy guy, he has a really important job, and he is certainly not emailing strangers on the internet to assist him with moving funds.

3. The Scam

Spam emails claiming to be from Kofi Annan seeking assistance in transferring funds are just a new name on the standard 419 scam. The emails even provide a link to the UN's real website - www.un.org - to try and make it look more legitimate. However, they cannot ask you to email Kofi Annan there, instead they use a free email account -

Note all of the above are free email addresses. You can get an email address there too. Kofi Annan would not be using one of those.

Anyone careless enough to get involved with these scammers will then be asked to send cash to the scammers for various expenses, without ever seeing the promised fortune.
