Unhappy It happened to me in mid April 2009 in Beijing

I feel pretty dumb as I write these lines. But after reading the posts here I am coming to terms with the possibility that it happened to me recently.
Basically, it worked the same way you are describing it here: I got an email showing interest for one of our products. After a few 'ping-pong' emails negociating the terms for a $750k contract they asked me to come sign it in China. When asked, they said that because the client was the government they had to have an original stamp on the document... I also tried the 'pay something in advance to show commitment' trick but they claimed that the government will not pay this in advance and it's imperative that we sign it there. They offered to take care of 50% of my travel expenses after they got the cash from their client.
The odds being $2000+ (for a 3 night stay) vs. $750k contract, I ended up going to Beijing on mid April 2009. I bought a book on Chinese Etiquete and downloaded some podcasts to learn some basic Chinese...
We finally had our meeting. Present were: the guy I had exchanged emails with (Zhang Lei), their "VP" called Wu Mingxuan - he appologized and said the wife of the CEO had an accident the night before so he couldn't join..., their "CFO" (the guy with the official stamp) I never got his business card, and a woman translator (didn't get her business card either).
We had a 3 hour meeting in which they told me about their company. They said it was established in 1976 and that it had a staff of 47 and did a lot of import/export activities. In addition, they claimed to have two manufacturing facilities in the fields of "food" and "textiles". They also told me that every year towards July the company has a special dinner for their business associates and they have this special event in which they come from all over the world and spend time together. They tour them around the facilities and socialize over dinner.
After a while we went over the contract and when the translator said it was ok we went on and signed it. After this, I gave them a 'corporate present' I brought with me from the US (the book mentioned the importance of providing them with a gift...). They thanked me and then it started getting wierd: the "VP" suggested that in order to establish a good relationship with the company I should get a present for the CEO (who couldnt make it) and the 2 Presidents they have at corporate. I thanked him for the suggestion and told them I would have the hotel concierge take care of this. The VP insisted that we should do it now... that he has a few minutes and will gladly take me to a nearby shopping mall and will suggest something.
We went to this mall and they wanted me to spend $250 per present (x3)... when I told them this was to much and that I was willing to spend $100, the woman suggested that instead of 3 we should perhaps get one really nice present for the CEO... The VP pointed out a few times that a carton of cigarettes is $100... that I should really give them a nice present.
They pointed to this little frame with a golden ship and explained how this meant that we shall have a 'smooth' relationship just as the 'wind blows this ship', etc. I said ok, and when I got the paper slip and when to pay at the cashier, I took the AMEX just on time because I noticed too many zeros on the register... I asked for a calculator and did my math: they were going to charge me $1800 USD... I told them this was way too much and that I would simply bring the CEO and the other 2 a nice present from the US when I came back on July. They insisted and that is when this whole thing kicked in... I told them that according to our tradition it was not nice to 'send someone a present' and that I would simply bring it to them personally.
After this, they escorted me to the door of the shopping mall and we said goodbye. (Strangest business meeting farewell party).
I'm back home now and have been trying to contact them several times. No answer to emails and they won't answer their phones. I am counting the business days (we're now officially at 27) and hope to see a nice 40% down payment via wire transfer to our account in the next 3 days.
In the meantime, and just in case the money never comes through... here are two pictures of the guys. This picture was taken after we signed the contract. The one in the polo shirt is the VP (I got a special 'conservative' suit for this trip!) and the one with the suit is the CFO.
Has anyone tried contacting the Chinese embassy or something like that?

CHINA FASHION SHOW

i too was contacted by mr. yao from hebei langfang commerce co. to organize a tour of ten cities for a fashion show for a new line of clothing. i am supposed to leave next week, june 3rd to go and sign the contracts. my story is the same as the others. it all seemed too good to be true, so today i googled the name of the company and i found this web page. i am just glad that i found it before travelling all the way to china.

it does seem like a stupid scam to me. i mean they have really just made me loose alot of time, and it does not seem like they had so much to earn on it, but i guess if they scam alot of people that it adds up for them.

remi are you from a model agency in belgium??

Hainan Yuanyi Import and Export Co. Hainan

I have to report a similar story: They contacted us for an extrem huge order, ready to buy and pre finance. Since we anyway had to go China we paid them a visit. Contract signature more than strange, conditions for us that nice, hard to believe. Back home the required for notary fee of 0,1 %, to pay before they start order pre payment. Waiting now for reactions, we'll not pay of course

Y&L Foreign Trading Co - Scammer

I was approached by this company recently, the girl called Amanda/Paris in earlier posts now calls herself as Vicky Liu. Same old trick, $ 300,000 order, no details required, come to Guilin and sign the contract with my boss Mr. Wuan King

This was the address provided. -

Name : vicky liu
Company Name : Y&L Foreign trading Co.,Ltd
Address : Building 48 LuanDong, No. Ten Kongming Xi Road,Guilin
Phone : 86-773-5679097
Email Address : yinglianxiu@yahoo.com

They are already well known in Alibaba as scammers so all I did was have some fun with them rolling around big numbers and even got them to send me a "Visa Letter"

On the last email, I addressed Vicky as Paris Long and she got really confused as to which person she was writing to me as.

Received an email initially by Sophy from Y&L Foreign Trading initially by Sophy and later Chardonnay, asking me to supply wine samples to them. Email name is nice Wong.
I insist them they have to pay for wines plus freight and duties. Only will reimburse the cost of wines when they place an order and receive the payment upfront. Never hear from them since 8/8/2009.

You can get me directly by PM or email, also via the expat web site.

Very complex society.
Guilin is unique in away because they have been receiving a lot of foreign tourists here for long time, more then most city's out side Beijing,Shanghai and Shenzen.
They see Westerns as very rich people and the loss of money is irrelevant for them.
The reason they see them as rich is because of the exchange rate, it as been very good in the past, so what looks like a lot of money to them is quite little to us, hence they think we big spenders.
They also scam each other on a daily basis, this is normal business for them.
Walk into any shop and it rare to see a price on anything, you have to barter on the most simplest thing, (all thou this is changing in bigger stores) even items with so called fixed prices I guarantee you can half them on the price.
In fact most the time I get better deals then the local Chinese, because the locals don't know the real world price of things here, they get so ripped off.
You may thing they have scamed you for small amounts here so why bother, but as i said the exchange rate makes it worth while.
Bear in mind the average wage here is about 1000 rmb a month for workers, 2000 for office workers. Top jobs 4000rmb. 11UKP= 110rmb
The big businessmen here may be 50,000 upward a month and believe me theres a lot of rich people here, more then i ever imagined.
Theres a lot of Taiwanese here as well and there the worst scammers, they have a lot of money in the first place to come here and set up, when there done they sod of back to Taiwan. Cant be touched.
Some of the things Ive read are just normal stuff here. Most of this is easily avoided by making contact with the right people on the ground before you land here.
That said Ive met people here and warned them what not to do and they still go and do it and get ripped.
Chinese are very happy people and convincing so you think there being straight with you.
I can honestly say i was mug when i first got here but now they got little chance.
I can always tell when i done well in a deal, cause they don't smile when i walk away.
If there still smiling when you hand the money over, well you know you been had.

I am showing below, I hope, photographs of two of the perpetrators, the key men, they are so arrogant about not getting caught that they have no qualms about having their photos taken.

Dear Whiskyman, I will add one more photo of my own bad experience. Can you tell if what you see on my picture is the same office/room as on yours?
The photo taking direction is different, but in general those two seem to be very similar, also I remember that the two red flags were on the table, as shown in your pic.
