Today, March 17th, an Upper Allen Township resident reported a suspicious letter that she received. The envelope is addressed from Canada but the letter inside says that it is from the “Royal Trust Corporation” out of Niagara Falls, New York. The letter informs the recipient that they have won a lottery and the enclosed check is to help them pay the associated taxes. After cashing the check and forwarding money to the “Royal Trust Corporation,” the recipient will find out that the check is a fraud and they are then responsible for the money. Meanwhile, the “Royal Trust Corporation” is a few thousand dollars richer. The letter contains numerous spelling and grammatical errors which points towards the fact that it is a scam, along with the fact that the check has the word “VOID” concealed very well against the background. The resident said that she never entered any lotteries which is another clue that this is more then likely a scam.
If you receive this letter or any other letter that you believe to be a scam, DO NOT CASH ANY ENCLOSED CHECKS! For other tips on how to prevent yourself from becoming the victim of a crime, refer to the “Crime Prevention” section of our website.
