Lightbulb Fund Accountant Offer... is it a scam?

I received an offer the other day from MFM Group's BPO department offering me a position as fund accountant. The original e-mail reads as follows:


MFM Group offers a full/part time position of Fund Accountant for United States citizens/legal aliens (Note: Previous experience in accounting is not required).
MFM Group is one of the largest asset management companies with a successful long term commitment history.

MFM Group is an independent, private, owner-managed company since 1996 with offices around the world. At MFM Group, our experience in the alternative investment market is reflected in the structure of our investment vehicles: a family of long-term funds. So, I replied back with questions about the position and what the requirements are and they emailed me back this e mail:

Greetings, Michelle Faulkner. My name is Michael Philipoff, I'm a Human Resources department representative. According to our company's employment rules and regulations, I would like to discuss your employment terms and conditions; also I will guide you through the first step of the employment procedure.



During the first step I will briefly describe your major responsibilities and take care of the required paperwork. We are an international company that hires USA staff to work remotely from our headquarter office. An accountant is one of the primary figures in our business that handles a large portion of our day-to-day business. While working in the BPO accounting department, you will have an ability to work from home using our Windows and Mac certified web based software.



You will be working via our virtual office system and get access to the employee's area of our web site. I will introduce you to your assigned manager and he will explain to you how to work with our virtual office system in details. Also your assigned manager will supervise you during the whole period of your employment at MFM Group.



Your fund accountant responsibilities at the BPO accounting department will consist of (but not limited to): working with clients, performing financial transactions, preparing month-end and quarter-end statements and reporting to the head office, as well as monitoring and reviewing transaction details and related system reports for accuracy and completeness.



The base salary is $3000 per month, plus an additional 3% commission off of each transaction. Please note: this is a part time employment opportunity with a flexible work schedule. You can apply for a full time position after a 3 month trial period. Your schedule may vary between 2 to 4 hours per day, depending on the amount of our clients.



Please pay attention to the attached contract and read it thoroughly. If you accept the employment terms and conditions, please fill out the attached contract, print it, sign it and fax it to (646) 219-1443. After you fax the signed contract please send us an e-mail marked as "HR request" and attach a scanned copy of some proof of identity, such as the driver's license or the state id.

Seminar period lasts 20 days, afterwards you will be offered to take an exam. If you succeed, you will be offered to join our Brokerage department as a part time position, in addition to your primary job at the BPO Department.

I would really like to know if this is a scam because it would be a really good opportunity otherwise.

Scam. A business managing assets worth over 1.7 billion dollars, with no website and using a free Gmail address?
By the sound of it, you'd be banking fake checks, and sending 90% to the scammer via Western Union.

I researched a bit more online and apparently the only MFM Group, Inc. I can find actually was dissolved this year. Scam anyone?

One of the casualties of the recession and there will be or already have civil suits.

The mail is definitely a scam and it is a cut and paste.

Possible cheque fraud.

I have recieved dozens of these emails....

Every time I put up my resume on Monster/Workopolis, I start getting these emails. I believe they are total scam.

I am a unemployed engineer who posted his resume on several free internet resume services including monster.com I received a similar e-mail from a Mihkel Kraav. I was sceptical at first but now I am sure it's a fraud thanks to the people on this board.

I have been laid off for 1 year and 7 months now. Does anybody know of a legitimate computer job I can do at home?
