Hamilton man charged with internet fraud

A Hamilton man has been charged with using the internet to bilk victims of more than $35,000.

The 20-year-old man is charged with defrauding 23 victims across Canada.

He is charged with using social media sites such as Kijiji and Facebook, as well as Blackberry Messenger, to sell popular electronics and tickets to major concerts and sporting events, Hamilton Police Service said in a media release Wednesday.

Once people transferred the money to his account, police say, the products were not delivered.

Hamilton Police Services's major fraud branch has been investigating the suspect since last October. He used several aliases.

The combined losses total more than $35,000.

Hamilton police worked with officers in Edmonton, Halton, Ottawa, Peel, Sudbury, Toronto, Waterloo and Winnipeg, as well as the RCMP.

The man is charged with three counts of fraud over $5,000, 21 counts of fraud under $5,000, 19 counts of failing to comply with probation and six counts of failing to comply with recognizance.
