Some exchange sites purport to offer security by only allowing "members" to access other members. Be careful. Even though it is a bit obvious, I received this absolute lulu today:

I am a Mike Thomas and i am a very busy man because i travel all around the europe due to the type of work i do and i am to start my trips anytime from now and i cant leave my house and my pets all alone because my wife his also a very busy woman. Therefore i saw your post that you will like to be my house sitter in the UK i will want to know where you are at present, your age and if you can start by this January or early Febraury i will really appreciate it and also love it. Little description about me and my family, we are lovely and caring, you do not need to be shy. Our house is a very big one, we have 5bathroom and 5bedroom in our house and also a swimming pool if you know how to swimm, a beautiful garden for relaxation whenever we are less busy we go there and relax, i would also like to tell you that you will be living in my home while i am away. I will even introduce you to my travelling agency in other to make your trip to the U.K a fast one if you are not in the UK. My pets are lovely inteligent and good looking, there names are bruno a dog and tessy a (female cat). I want you to be with them and take good care of them and my house for about 6 months or above. I look forward to meeting you soon before i travel. All i need from you is trust and honesty for my house and my pets care.
Regards
Mike Thomas and family.

Likewise offers from many Italians. Exchange sites are used by letting agencies in Italy who approach you for an exchange and then, when you have bought the ticket and are close to leaving for your trip, they claim they must "decline" but can rent the property to you. This has happend to me 3 times and a friend once.
