We have received a report of a lottery scam using the following information. This person poses as an employee of the Inland Revenue, which is roughly equivalent to the American IRS.
ukinlandrevenueboard@hotmail.com
CONTACT PERSON: PAUL WRIGHT
TEL:+447011140559
The initial emails, as usual, claim you have won an international lottery. The scammers ask for various fees. The first is a delivery fee. If that is paid, the target is then instructed to pay taxes on the winnings.
Needless to say, officials of government agencies such as the Inland Revenue do not use free, anonymous hotmail addresses. Nor do they use +44701 numbers, which are personal forwarding numbers. They appear to be in the UK, but can be forwarded anywhere in the world.
Additionally, international lotteries do not exist. Legitimate lotteries do not notify winners by email. You cannot win a lottery unless you enter, which is typically done by purchasing a ticket in person. Advance fees on winnings in a lottery or sweepstakes are illegal virtually everywhere in the world. And finally, taxes are not due until you actually receive your winnings, not before.
