The Social Security Administration has issued a warning about a new email scam targeting your personal information.
The agency says this scam is built around the recent cost of living benefit increase issued to millions of Americans in October.
The subject line of the email reads, "Cost-of-Living for 2007 Update."
Administrators say the email claims to be from the Social Security Administration. The message gives information about the 3.3 percent benefit increase for 2007.
The fake email goes on the say, "NOTE: We now need you to update your personal information. If this is not completed by November 11, 2006, we will be forced to suspend your account indefinitely." The SSA says this email is a scam.
The email then connects users to a phony website in which the individual is asked to register for a password and to confirm their identity by giving personal information like Social Security numbers, bank account, and credit card information.
Social security administrators say do not give out your information. This email is a fake and could put your personal information at risk.
If you have received this email or have already fallen victim to a Social Security scam call the Social Security's Office of the Inspector General at 1-800-269-0271.
