Phishing Scams
A number of customers from other financial institutions continue to receive deceptive emails contain links to false bank websites. These customers have then entered their online banking details, believing the site belongs to a real financial institution, when in fact the site is fraudulent. These details are then captured by an unauthorised person/s, who use them to commit fraud.
Remember, BankWest will never ask you for your online banking details. If you have concerns about any suspicious emails you receive, please notify BankWest immediately on 13 17 18.
Payment Recipient Scams
The criminals who carry out online fraud require payment recipients and bank accounts through which they can direct funds and launder their money. Innocent parties have been deceived into assisting the fraudsters to carry out these crimes in several ways. Two examples are;
Advertisements are placed with employment agencies for financial or account staff. After applicants have been notified of their appointment to the role, they are asked to receive and distribute funds on behalf of the company via their personal accounts.
People have been approached via email or chat rooms where they have been asked to facilitate international funds transfers, due to costs or restrictions on doing these transactions overseas, and in return receive a percentage of these funds.
Money laundering is a serious crime. If the offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is. If you are in a situation similar to the above examples, please notify BankWest immediately on 13 17 18.
Spyware/Keyloggers
These are threats that attempt to place an unauthorised program on to your computer designed record all your keyboard strokes as you type. The program will then try to email the captured information to unauthorised people, who then search it for your personal or online banking details.
Trojans
Once installed, Trojans will enable a remote user to gain unauthorised access to your computer. The unauthorised user then has the ability to monitor everything you do via your computer whilst it remains infected.
