Mrs. Sese Seko – The fact, the fiction and the scam

1. The Facts

Bobi Ladawa Mobutu is the widow of Mobutu Sese Seko, who was President of Zaire (now known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo), for 32 years until his death in 1997. It is believed that she and the family of the late dictator has access to billions of dollars. In fact, it was reported in 1998 that, along with a son, she set up a foundation for charitable programs in Africa and the US. She is clearly capable of handling her own finances, no matter how small or large they are.

2. The Fiction

Mrs. Sese Seko (Mobutu), using a variety of first names including Bobi, Mariam, Kalisara and Caroline, is supposedly sending emails to strangers on the internet seeking assistance in transferring funds. This is not likely. She has family, friends and a large number of people who can help her with anything that she may need.

DEAR FRIEND,

I AM MRS.BOBI LADAWA SESE-SEKO WIDOW OF LATE PRESIDENT MOBUTU SESE-SEKO OF ZAIRE? NOW KNOWN AS DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO (DRC). I AM MOVED TO WRITE YOU THIS LETTER, THIS WAS IN CONFIDENCE CONSIDERING MY PRESENT CIRCUMSTANCE AND SITUATION.

I ESCAPED ALONG WITH MY HUSBAND AND TWO OF OUR SONS THEOPHILUS AND BASHER NZANGA OUT OF DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO (DRC) TO ABIDJAN, COTE D'IVOIRE WHERE MY FAMILY AND I SETTLED, WHILE WE LATER MOVED TO SETTLED IN MORROCO WHERE MY HUSBAND LATER DIED OF CANCER DISEASE.

The above a sample of emails that the scammers send out - it is designed to make you feel sorry for this poor, tortured and traumatised woman. These scammers are preying on your emotions and compassion for fellow human beings.

3. The Scam

Spam emails claiming to be from Mrs. Sese-Seko seeking assistance in transferring funds are a new twist on an old scam. The ladies who lose their husbands and then send emails out all over the internet looking for help now that their husband is dead is a long and distinguished list of former first ladies and widows of now deceased world leaders.

The list includes -

Imelda Marcos (http://www.fraudwatchers.org/forums/showthread.php?t=413), wife of Ferdinand Marcos who was the president of the Phillipines, famous for her large shoe collection
Maryam (Mariam) Abacha (http://www.fraudwatchers.org/forums/showthread.php?t=258), wife of Sanni Abacha, who was the Nigerian head of state for 5 years before his death
Luisa Estrada (http://www.fraudwatchers.org/forums/showthread.php?t=265) wife of disgraced former Philippine president Joseph Estrada
Suha Arafat (http://www.fraudwatchers.org/forums/showthread.php?t=408), wife of Yasser Arafat, leader of the Palestinian Authority until his death in 2004.
Mrs Savimbi (http://www.fraudwatchers.org/forums/showthread.php?t=414) (Her first name varies) former wife of Jonas Savimbi, Angolan guerrilla leader
Mrs. Guéï (http://www.fraudwatchers.org/forums/showthread.php?t=412) (her first name varies) former wife of Robert Guei, military ruler of Ivory Coast from December 1999 to October 2000

The above is not a complete list, there are a lot more names used in this scam format, of real people and fake names, as well.

It is quite an insult to women, to assume that once their husband is deceased, they would not have any friends or family who could assist them with anything they may need, and instead they have to resort to strangers on the internet!

Anyone careless enough to get involved with these scammers will be asked to send cash to the scammers for various expenses, without ever seeing the promised fortune.
