Mrs Savimbi The fact, the fiction and the scam
1. The Facts
There are times when the scammers use real news headlines to fuel the storyline of their scams and this is one of them. Jonas Savimbi was survived by his wife Catarina, who was wounded in the clash which killed him. Apparently he had several wives and many children. However it is unlikely they were given any of his stockpile of money and precious gems - Jonas Savimbi was killed while on the run from the many enemies he had made during his lifetime.
2. The Fiction
Mrs. Savimbi (first name changes from email to email), or one of her children is supposedly sending out emails to strangers on the internet looking for help transferring funds.
May I use this opportunity to introduce my self as DR.(MRS.) FRANCA TAMI SAVIMBI I am the wife to the late MR. GREAT JONAS SAVIMBI, the leader of the Angolan revolutionary group known as the (UNITA) who died in the year 2002 while on active duty in an effort to liberate our people. I am contacting you with the believe that we will develop a cordial business relationship which will be beneficial to both parties.
I am Eloy Sakiata Savimbi, son of the late leader of Unita Rebel Jonas Savimbi of Angola who died on the 22nd February2002. Before the death of my father he deposited the sum of USD15,000,000.00 (fifteen million united states dollars) in a private security trust compnay for safe keeping only.
My name is Oliveira Chuli Savimbi, I am a nephew and Personal Assistant to Late Jonas Malheiro Savimbi, leader of UNITA (National Union for the Total Independence of Angola). As led by my instinct, I selected your email Address from an Internet directory, in my search for a partner, hence this email. I also crave your indulgence to read this carefully, and have a general Overview of my situation. My Uncle (Mentor) was killed in a battle with government forces of Angola, led by President Dos Santos, on Friday 22nd February 2002. After his death, Mr. Antonio Dembo who was his second in command, assumed office as leader of UNITA, due to lack of the Charisma my Uncle had carried the party with in Dembo, there was chaos and struggle for leadership. Prominent members like Carlos Morgado lobbied to depose him and assumed office as leader to enrich themselves and some of them who saw me as a threat to their ambitions, including Mr.Dembo, planned to kill me. The tension and confusion in UNITA become uncontrollable when Mr. Dembo died 10days after my Uncle's death. As I lost my mentor in this struggle that has been on for three decades now, not so much of the struggle is of interest to me anymore, as there is longer any sense of direction. I have therefore resolved to live a very peaceful life, as I am no more interested in conflicts and wars. For this reason, I secretly left Angola and to seek for political asylum in Europe.
3. The Scam
Spam emails claiming to be from Mrs. Savimbi seeking assistance in transferring funds are a new twist on an old scam. The ladies who lose their husbands and then send emails out all over the internet looking for help now that their husband is dead is a long and distinguished list of former first ladies and widows of now deceased world leaders.
The list includes -
Imelda Marcos (http://www.fraudwatchers.org/forums/showthread.php?t=413), wife of Ferdinand Marcos who was the president of the Phillipines, famous for her large shoe collection
Maryam (Mariam) Abacha (http://www.fraudwatchers.org/forums/showthread.php?t=258), wife of Sanni Abacha, who was the Nigerian head of state for 5 years before his death
Luisa Estrada (http://www.fraudwatchers.org/forums/showthread.php?t=265) wife of disgraced former Philippine president Joseph Estrada
Suha Arafat (http://www.fraudwatchers.org/forums/showthread.php?t=408), wife of Yasser Arafat, leader of the Palestinian Authority until his death in 2004.
Mrs Sese-Seko (http://www.fraudwatchers.org/forums/showthread.php?t=416) (Her first name varies) former wife of Mobuto Sese-Seko, the President of ZaireThe above is not a complete list; there are a lot more names used in this scam format, of real people and fake names, as well.
It is quite an insult to women to assume that once their man is deceased they would not have any friends or family who could assist them with anything they may need, and instead they have to resort to strangers on the internet!
Anyone careless enough to get involved with these scammers will be asked to send cash to the scammers for various expenses without ever seeing the promised fortune.
