Macaw Cameroon Pet Scam Fraud

Greetings,

I was almost scammed by someone posing as George Santez <gsantez49@yahoo.com> who claims he works for the Navy as Chief of Navel Operations in Cameroon and thought you might like to know about it. There are two posts under that email account on pets.oodle.com. I realized it was a scam when I googled his information and hit fraudwatchers.com.

Please let me know if there is anything you can do/who I need to contact to get this properly reported to Cameroon authorities. He is actually waiting for my reply o phone call right now. WHAT SHOULD I DO?

The scammer tried to call me from 591-625-81578, 403-886-25858 & 886-221-44320 an hour ago and wants me to return his call. I didn't answer but I wish I could get the Cameroon police to call.

I tried to attach the entire coorespondence but it was too large.

He offered to send the bird though Competent Airlines in Cameroon. "they told me that to ship Lola and her accessories directly to your Home address is going to cost a total of $320 .they also told me that there shall be a direct flight to your location on Saturday June12/2010 in the evening okay".

this guy is a joke he told me he would send me "zoeys" papers and proof of ownership and all her info before i sent any money when i replied and said i would take her suddenly hes in a hurry and wants me to send him $270.00 right away via western union and then he will send her tomorrow morning. he also says he is a chief naval officer and has been deployed to cameroon and has nobody stateside to watch the bird........... after realizing how he puts his words together i come to the idea that if he says he has a family shouldnt they take care of zoey????????????? news flash "george Santez" dependents are not permitted to go to cameroon......... but hey im an ex navy man what do i know?????? thank you for this site i googled his name and up popped this............... very interesting

He posted Bella Free to a good home and was in Texas.

Then it turned into $350, and would ship from Camaroon (he spelled it Kamaroon)
8 month old Cockatoo that knew a dozen words.

They loved it so much, but couldn't keep it, yet they had no problem stuffing it in a crate and shipping it to the US.

Only problem was they were too stupid to realize you need a license to ship animals into the us, and there is a 30 quarantine.

But you know what, people fall for this, otherwise they wouldn't do it.

Im also ten minutes off being scammed!! The people im dealing with have a website called cutie-puppies, they r trying to get me to send a western union payment to have a chihuahua delivered to my door by 5.30 today!! I actually believed them until i saw the Carmeroon bit!! Im disgusted how can people openly & uncaringly scam you for your hard earned money & not even care!! I almost fell for this, too! His grammar and misspelling of Camaroon were big hints to me that something was just off. I knew two free macaws was too good to be true! Here is the text he used this time:

I also almost just got scammed by this fraudster. he was using the e-mail address georgedell@live.com. Rather than the Navy he said he was living in the Sheltland Islands, the e-mails were pretty identical to those posted though.

So I figured, "Who knows, why not check this out and see where it goes from there?" I did and a few days later I get a reply back from 'a woman' stating a slightly varied story from those posted above, telling me that she works in the navy and that she was deployed to Cameroon but that her daughter died in a car accident there three weeks ago and that she and her husband couldn't even stand looking at the bird because of all the bad memories. So I replied saying that I was available to pick the bird up in Toronto (location stated in ad) that upcoming weekend. But the reply I received stated that they were in Richmond, Virginia, USA, that they would ship the bird to me, that they needed all my info (full name, address, etc.) and that I would have to send them $250.00 for the shipping costs. 'She' also sounded this time to be in a hurry to receive the money.

Almost as soon as I began reading the e-mail I thought to myself, "Sigh* I'm not getting this bird afterall..." What ever happend to "Toronto"? "Three weeks ago"? Then why was the ad posted "a month ago"? "$250.00 ≠ "giving out". It's sad to see how some people treat their fellow mankind...it really is.

You're right Saddened Canadian, it's sad indeed. Be assured that the vast majority of pets for adoption ads out there are scams unfortunately. You would have much better luck of getting a macaw by registering yourself on a waitlist from a local parrot shelter. ;)

Me and my boyfriend were looking to buy a Dogue De Bordeaux puppy, after seeing Mr 'Harry Whiteland' (nice and english) he sounded genuine through emails. When we telephoned him, he spoke some english we immediately thought he sounded a bit dodgy, but as he was selling his pups cheaper we thought we'd give him the benefit of the doubt.
He sent us plenty of pictures of 'our' puppy (which we found today were actually professional pictures and taken from genuine adverts, just copied and pasted) His telephone number +447031835857 just looked British, he told us he was in the timber industry in Northern Ireland.

I feel such a fool for almost falling for this scam but when it came to paying it just didnt seem genuine. looking at all the post on here, its been going on for years and they'll try anything hope this helps.

@ rambo25 He will probably continue to contact you however, I do not believe that he will do anything once he realizes he won't get any money from him. Moreover, he's a Cameroon. You should know that a +4470 number is NOT in the UK and that any request for payment via Western Union/MoneyGram indicates a scam. @ momof5lewis Unfortunately, there is little you can do that will get your money back if you sent it via Western Union or MoneyGram. You can report it to Cameroon authorities but there is no chance of them getting your money back. For one thing, even if they had the resources and desire to do anything, there is very little chance of them even knowing for sure who scammed you. They use fake names, free email addresses, pre-paid mobile phones, fake Ids and they can pick up money from Western Union/MoneGram with just the test question, fake ID or by paying of the WU/MG employees. There really is no point continuing to talk to him. You should stop communicating with him completely. I'm sorry, by posting the scam you have done all you can do. At least some others will be warned and he will lose money as people come more educated.

What you now need to do is simply ignore any further emails from him, as well as phone calls. It shouldn't take very long for your scammer to leave you alone once you put this in application. ;)

just today we almost got scammed buying a beagle puppy...don mark said his wife is sick and could not take care of the puppy since they are moving to florida for her treatment...just pay the shipping company and give the dog lots of love....the shipping company emails me saying pay only western union...i sent the money (stupid) and felt very uneasy when someone called me saying the dog would be here in 4 hours. I came home googled the info and found your site...Immediatly i called western union they stopped the transfer and i got my money back...

I was recently looking for a yorkie puppy and like others I was very close to loosing money! I was contacted by a nina edwad email address is [ninaedwad774@yahoo.com] I was told all I had to do was pay 150.00 for shipping and I thought what a deal!! These puppies usually range anywhere from 800-1300 easily. I actually went and wired money per money gram and got back to work looken on the internet and then called money gram to cancel the transaction! I then got atleast 10-15 out of country calls as late as 330am. Since last week this women has been pleading with me to take "LOLA" seems to be a popular name!! now she is asking I only pay 40.00 now and the rest when I recieve the pet. Told her no can do send it then I will pay.. Then I found out 150.00 here is 447,000 there!!! WOW!!! please be aware of this I even called her out on other ads I had seen a year ago and she swore it wasnt here...OK!!

I'm glad that you did take the time to search before sending in the money. That puppy never existed, except in the mind of your scammer.

A puppy should not be bought online. Just like humans, they have their own temperaments and may not be suited for you. For this reason, you need to be able to see and touch one before going ahead with a purchase.

It all started when I was looking for a puppy on the internet. I found a site (pennysaverusa) and saw an ad that said "free top quality pomeranian" the emailer was castella_babara@hotmail.com. She was talking about how I will take care of her babies (poms) blah blah blah after all the info I gave her she started rushing me onto the payment. Said I had to pay RIGHT now or tomorrow in the morning. I FELL FOR IT! She made me pay $360 for the "shipping fee" of three puppies via of course Western Union. To a person named

She was living in Cameroon too. She supposedly said she is in the organization called WHO and was helping people in Cameroon overcome Malaria in pregnant women... says she is 27 years old and got married two years ago and has a first child. So after I payed her the 360 $ she said she is on her way to the "airport" I don't know a lot about airlines but I think she made an "airline" email that came on the same time she said she will go to the airport. WEIRD! RIGHT?! The "email" said I had to pay $2,640.00 US dollars. For the "pet insurance" Last time I remebered insurance doesn't cost that much... and you can't just ship your pet from africa all the way to the USA and she or he made an airline called Capet Travel. I searched the whole google and found nothing of that name. So I knew something was up. Also one thing that made suspicious was because of her use of words. This may be silly but she always says "ok" at the end. (Ex: So your flight arrangement to your house is ok. I will call the aiport agent ok. Just wait ok.) and ALSO i found other scammers from Cameroon say ok too. =O And yeaaa... that's how I was scammed. I am sooo relieved i found this website or else I would've payed another 2k or another.

I'm sorry to hear that you were scammed. You already know that the money is gone and cannot be recuperated, but I still urge you to file a fraud report with the FBI's cybercrime division. This will at least serve to make your government aware of how much of a problem these scams are becoming.

I received a text message this morning all it said is "Are you there" I texted back who r u? and then she said I responded to her ad regarding Beagles. I told her to email me details, photos etc.... After I looked up where exactly Mid Way Cameroon is and found your site. My guess based on your experience is that she is now going to ask me for a western union payment for shipping. These puppies go anywhere from $400-$2000+ in the upper amount if they are really from champion bloodlines. If this is a scam, what really angers me is I actually did lose a close family member and a close friend to a drunk driver, how anyone can prey on people like that makes me sick :Q I will keep you informed as to what she wants next.

Wow, it's as if he/she were using "Anatomy of a Pet Scam" for pointers. You really know how they work.

I am trying to string her along as long as possible, making her beleive she is going to get a big payday, as you can see I even offered her a donation for the pup in memory of her daughter.

This person is evil, preying on innocent victims saying that her daughter died by "drunk driver", I've lost two very close poeple to me to drunk drivers, she is really sick in the head, like a sociopath.

You don't really want to muck around with these scammers. They are criminals and we discourage "scam baiting" which is what you are exploring. There are many websites which are devoted to such activities and you could seek guidance on one of those.

I suppose you are right, I just feel so angry and I didn't even get scammed. It really bothers me that this person is using a fake death of a daughter to scam people. I guess I should just count my blessings and let it go, I just wish there was more I could do so that the people this person has actually taken money from have some justice. I guess that is NOT going to happen, and this person will continue to scam other people that just want to open their hearts & homes to a animal that wont exist. It's just not right.

Im adding to inform you of a scam i recieved today throught my local freecycle website.
A blue and gold macaw was advertised so being a bird lover, I applied.
I recieved a reply from someone called RITA DICKSON, who said she worked in america and was from scotland, and had a busy job in the UD forces and needed to rehome the bird. SO i assumed that she had posted it on wrong webiste and she replied saying she wanted the bird back in the uk.
So, after a few emails and photos, I get an email from Petdepartment Wldwildshipping <petdepartmentwldwildshipping@yahoo.com>; saying the bird is with them, they are shipping now, she has food, toys cage everything and they need the shipping costs send via western union. then a phonecall from 07022987543 didnt answer as I knew it would be them. Well, then i realised this was a proper scan. Traced the webpage which was traced back to Cameroon! So I replied and acted dumb, said i didnt have a debit or credit card and would pay cash when the bird was delivered.
Well, the bird never arrived, and I never heard from them again!!! Fraudsters!!

Remember, deal locally where you can visit the pet and owner. Any offer of a pet where you cannot visit it and have to pay for delivery in advance is a scam, all of them.

Any mention of African nations, especially Cameroon or Nigeria in relation to a pet sale must be avoided as they are 100% fraudulent, and unless you are a professional importer, you could not do it even if it were real.
