Security

Help us fight the scam emails
Online Banking is a safe way to manage your money but you need to be on your guard against Internet fraudsters.

One way fraudsters try to get to your money is by getting you to disclose your security/log-in details through scam emails. Take these steps to fight this fraud:

1. Ignore emails claiming to be from Barclays that ask you to follow links to a site to confirm your Online Banking security and membership details. These emails and fake sites may look as if they're from Barclays but they are fraudulent. See example emails (http://www.personal.barclays.co.uk/BRC1/jsp/brccontrol?task=articlegroup&value=6454&target=_self&site=pfs).

2. If you think you've received a fraudulent email that looks like it's from Barclays, forward it to internetsecurity@barclays.co.uk and then delete it from your email account.

3. Always check the authenticity of the Barclays Online Banking site by checking its security certificate, which you can do by double-clicking on the padlock symbol on your browser. How to check site certificates (http://www.personal.barclays.co.uk/BRC1/jsp/brccontrol?task=articleFWgroup&value=6566&target=_self&site=pfs).

4. If you think you've given away your security details call the helpdesk on 0845 600 2323*, Monday to Sunday 7am-11pm. Outside the UK dial +44 247 684 2063*.

Get Verified by VISA
Verified by VISA gives you additional security when you shop online at participating retailers. Register for free at the Verified by VISA site (https://verifiedbyvisa.barclays.co.uk/barclays/registration/welcome.jsp?partner=debit.visa).

Keep your system and web browser updated
Manufacturers regularly release security patches when weaknesses are discovered in their systems and browsers. You can download the latest patches here:
- Windows and Internet Explorer (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/)
- Netscape Navigator (http://wp.netscape.com/security/)
- Apple Macs (http://www.info.apple.com/gben/)

Don't open 'Order confirmation' spam emails
Spam emails are circulating that link to malicious websites that try to download key-stroke capture trojans - these are viruses that record your activities on the web. Do not open this email and always follow the advice in using Online Banking (http://www.personal.barclays.co.uk/BRC1/jsp/brccontrol?task=articlegroup&value=3561&target=_self&site=pfs).

Additional income email scam
A current scam involves someone offering, via an email or website, to pay funds into your account on the understanding you then transfer them overseas. In return, you supposedly get a commission.

Many of these scams involve the proceeds of fraud and you should ignore the request. Any customer that participates will become involved in a police investigation and we could close any account involved in this scam.
