Security - Latest hoax email scam

Westpac is warning its customers to be aware of recent Internet scams, which involves sending out hoax emails claiming to be from Westpac and other major Australian banks.

Please note: Some hoax emails are poorly worded, and may contain grammar and spelling errors.

The most recent hoax email contains the following details (14 Nov 2005)

You will receive 50 AUD to your account balance in 2 months. That will be a reward for your patience. Please answer all our questions carefully.

Please follow the follwing link in order to take the survey

Subject line: (your intials) money transfer from your account
The body of the email asks customers to verify a transfer of funds in their account by clicking on a link within the email. The link will direct the customer to the legitimate Westpac website, however, by clicking on the link customers are potentially downloading a Trojan virus.

Our new scurity system will help you avoid frequently fraud transactions and to keep your deposited funds in safety.Due to technical update we recommend you to reactivate your account. Click on the link below to login and begin using your updated Westpac account.

If you suspect you have received one of these emails:
Please delete the email from your 'Inbox', and delete it again from your 'Deleted' folder, or 'Sent' folder if you have forwarded on the email. If you are using a computer in an office/corporate environment it is good practice to inform your system administrator of any suspicious emails.

If you suspect you have clicked on a link within the email:
1. Perform a scan for possible viruses and Trojans using your virus protection software. If you require further information, contact your software vendor.
