Hi Aspen and welcome to Fraudwatchers. :welcome:

Yes, your guess is correct. This is 100% a scam. Odds are that it was sent by Eastern European scammers.

The scammers will be scamming sellers on various trading sites (eg ebay) or online sales outlets by paying for goods with stolen or generated credit cards. The scammers need an intermediary to receive their stolen goods and send them off to Romania, or Russia somewhere where most US-based online sellers will not send goods. So when police come looking for the stolen goods, they end up finding the victim who responded to this scam email.

The website was registered 2006-05-28 and is hosted on a Russian server.

Seems the scammer posted on the forum here:

It's always interesting when they are stupid enough to do that... :)

Aspen:

This email you received is definately a scam. The exact email was listed in a weblog, written about on June 2, 2006, by Work At Home Business Opportunites (I have included the link below).

For what it is worth, I received an email today from another police officer asking the area police departments if this same letter was a scam. It appears that you made it to a mailing list (as did this other officer). Don't be fooled into sending any information and/or money to these people.

The link for the article I mentioned is:

When you see a message with strange workds at the bottom:

coefficient anselm deceit cork barnes bludgeon beehive blunder
caw conflagrate ambush coral canister amend ablate cold

it is cleary from a scammer. This is some kind of message they send to each other which makes no sense to anyone else.

Actually I think that is the non-html portion of the email. Typically this is used by spammers to fool spam filters. It is gobbledy-gook (nonesense), and means absolutely nothing. Joe would be able to claify that point I think.

What John said...

Spam filters look for patterns. If there's more than some percentage of matching patterns, it's classified as spam. Adding random words reduces the percentage of pattern, so the spam filter decides it's not spam.
