South Alabama is being flooded with a new version of the Lottery/Counterfeit Check scam, using snail mail instead of e-mails. The victims are receiving letters from “The Winners Management and Payment Centreâ€, stating that “The American States and Provinces Gaming Association Prize Poolâ€, has released their winning ticket numbers, and due to a set back in their computer system notification was delayed. The letter also includes a cashier's check from ADEC Federal Credit Union in Tennessee.
The victims are then advised that there are processing fees and surcharges that must be paid and gives a telephone number to call. When they call the number they get a man who tells them to deposit the check in their account and then call back for the total of the taxes and fees that will have to be paid. When the victim calls back they are advised to wire the payment by Western Union, and then the man wants their personal and bank information to verify that they are the rightful winner, thus stealing their identity as well.
