My new Mastercard has been used for some purchases on Amazon. The only problem is it wasn't by me. This card has not been in an situation where it could have been skimmed and the only on-line transactions have been phone banking with the major telco here. Fortunately because I use on-line banking, I picked it up quickly.

The bank guy I first spoke to said that they must have had the card number and the CVH, however I can't see how they could have. So in case I have problems with the disputed charges, does anyone have any bright ideas on how this could have come about?

Its a bit of a turnaround, me now asking about scams, not providing the answers!

Anybody???

Hey there George,

I'm no expert but thought I'd reply anyway. The first thing that springs to mind would be a pinhole camera and keypad overlay on an ATM.

The cc thieves used to use lebanese loops but that doesn't seem to happen so much any more, since people have got wise to looking fir odd things in and around the card slot. So it's even more underhand now. Sigh.

I hate to say it, but possible dodgy employee? I'll bet it's not the first time that someone in such a position of public trust has decided to abuse it.

Like I say, just a couple of things that popped into my head as I read your post.

Its looking like a hack into a company data or a bent employee. No ATM use either, so thats not an option. We'll see what they have to say on the reversals, but I suspect its not going to be an issue.

I wouldn't mind, but with my level of awareness of these things and the precautions I take, its particularly galling that there should be implied blame on my part.

George... if it's a hack or a bent employee that's hardly your fault. All of us can do everything humanly possible to protect our personal info, but if someone's determined to get at and abuse it, they'll find a way to do it. Not much consolation to you, I know. I'm sorry this has happened to you.

Let us know how you get on with the reversals, hey?

Take care,

TG
