The scammers are also posting on list servers and in newsgroups. Although those cannot be easily edited, they don't carry the same weight since anything can be posted by anyone, therefore most people will hopefully view them with skepticism, unlike university sites which lends credibility to this fraud and therefore makes it that much more virulent in creating victims.

For that reason, we are asking the site's administrators to remove these as soon as possible and reduce the risks.

*UPDATE. They have registered two domain names, both setup to give a 404 error when trying to log on. These where registered on April 14, 2006 and they are primely used for their emails:

This is a scam, and thank you for posting it.

unfpa-who.org is NOT from the United Nations but a domain registered by criminals specifically for this scam.

The (206) numbers are from a free phone/fax-to-email service, totally anonymous.

The real United Nations Population Fund web site is: http://www.unfpa.org/

The UNFPA's job listings are here:
http://www.unfpa.org/about/employment/index.htm
where ther have posted this notice:
Notice: UNFPA does not charge any application, processing, training, interviewing, testing or other fee in connection with the application or recruitment process. Should you have received a solicitation for the payment of a fee, please disregard it. Furthermore, please note that emblems, logos, names and addresses are easily copied and reproduced. Therefore, you are advised to apply particular care when submitting personal information on the web. Should you feel that you have received a fraudulent notice, letter or offer that makes use of the name or logo of UNFPA, you may submit a report through the UNFPA fraud hotline http://www.unfpa.org/help/hotline.cfm

They also have posted a fraud advisory here:
http://www.unfpa.org/help/fraud.html

Employment Fraud Advisory

UNFPA is currently aware of fictitious vacancy announcements or solicitations that are being circulated through the Internet, the purpose of which is to induce individuals to apply for positions and send in a fee for services related to recruitment or training. In some cases such announcements or solicitations reference actual vacancy posts.

Be advised UNFPA does not charge any application, processing or training fee at any stage of the recruitment process, nor does UNFPA authorize consultants, agencies or organizations to charge applicants a fee or fees for such services.

If you believe that you have received such a notice or solicitation, we would kindly request that you delete it and do not pass on to others.

Since logos, emblems, names and addresses can be copied or reproduced easily, you are advised to take particular care in applying for vacancies, including undertaking all appropriate measures to protect against the unauthorized use of any personal information you may have provided as a result of the scam. If you have any questions as to vacancy announcements you may have received, please refer to this website.
