Auto Trader fake lottery warning
21 July 2005

Auto Trader customers have been warned to be on the lookout for a scam involving a fake prize draw.

A small number of customers who have placed their car for sale on autotrader.co.uk have received emails from unscrupulous scammers. The email claims that the customer has won a sum of money in the 'Auto rewards lottery' prize draw, a 'govermental related proggramme' [sic].

The email requests personal details from the customer (including name, address and bank account number) and asks them to send a sum of money to an African bank account for a 'Western Union certificate'.

The golden rule is never to give any personal information or send any money to anyone who claims that you have won a lottery that you did not enter.

One scam email recently forwarded to Auto Trader by a customer used the email address winners_autotrader@lycos.com - Auto Trader is keen to point out that will never use a free email account (e.g. Hotmail or Lycos) to send emails to customers.

If you receive an email that you think is suspicious, don't hesitate in contacting Auto Trader's customer service team on 0845 345 3450 or email enquiries@autotrader.co.uk
