Hi and welcome to FraudWatchers; any alleged "job opportunity" that involves the cashing of cheques or money orders for so-called "companies" are indeed a scam, and the general method of these frauds are described in this thread:
http://www.fraudwatchers.org/forums/showthread.php?t=257
The cheques or money orders that are sent out are either forgeries or have come from stolen cheque books; in either case, the criminals rely on the recipients to deposit these with their banks, then wait the usual 3-5 days for clearance. This is why they don't always ask for bank details - they don't need them.
What needs to be borne in mind is that the banks operate a "best service" policy with regards to the clearance process, and in order to provide a service to their customers, give a workable clearance period before they say that the funds are available to the customer. The scammers then rely on the customer withdrawing the funds and sending the cash via an untraceable route (Western Union or MoneyGram) to their criminal accomplices. Once this has happened, the money is gone for ever.
The actual bank clearance process may take several weeks, even months, whilst the physical procedure of fund confirmation is completed; obviously at this stage, the "employee's" bank are informed of the bogus cheque/money order and the bank then looks to the "employee" for full reimbursement - in addition, they may also press criminal charges for attempted fraud.
I hope this clarifies matters for you; please don't hesitate to post any further questions or concerns that you may have.

The question has already been answered, and reading this (http://www.fraudwatchers.org/forums/showthread.php?t=257) will also provide further information.
Any offer of employement which involves the acceptance of payments from one party, cashing the payment, then sending the money elsewhere, is 100% Fraudulent. There is no such job. Only a bona-fide financial institution is legally able to handle, process and transfer funds between parties. For members of the general public, any such offer is ILLEGAL.
