Hello Zarbeita,

Welcome to Fraudwatchers.org, and thanks for posting this scam lottery letter.

And a definite fraud it is. Here are some of the ways you can tell it's a fraudulent attempt at scamming you out of your hard-earned money.

1. Note the email address it comes from: oceanicagencias@netscape.net

All netscape.net addresses are free email addresses. No legitimate business or lottery uses free email addresses to contact their winners. In fact, if you actually had won a lottery, the agency would most likely contact you in person, or by registered postal mail.

2. The letter informs you that you need to pay some "fees" of 1880 euros before you can collect your "winnings" and further informs you that you cannot have those fees deducted from your "winnings."

Any legitimate lottery would, in fact, automatically deduct any fees or taxes from your winnings before you received them. This is what is known as an "advance fee fraud." You are required to pay a fee for some large promised payoff downstream. If you did pay, you would find that the demands for payment of fees and other monies would continue until you got tired of paying. Since there is no "fund" or "winnings," the fraud just continues with the victim paying until he/she runs out of money or refuses to pay any more. Then the scammers disappear.

3. You probably don't recall entering this lottery by purchasing a ticket or paying an entry fee.

Remember, you can't win a contest you don't enter. There is no such thing as a random, big-prize drawing held on the internet.

Again, thanks for visiting fraudwatchers.org. I hope you'll tell your friends and acquaintences about this site so that they can also become educated, and thus protected, from these scams.
