I have a question but may be posting this in the wrong place. Is there a way to do a background name check on lawyers in other countries?

Usually, the Law Societies (or Bar Associations) of the country involved have an official website where some checks can be made of members.

Saying that, it really depends on the national associations, and what is required by law regarding practicing lawyers.

Can you please post the details of the lawyer you wish to check? If you'd rather keep it discreet, please use our Contact Us form and give the information you have, including any email addresses used, and, if an email has been received from them, the header information would be useful.

Thia has a list of all practicing attorneys in Ghana. Although it states 'as of September 2004', the page is updated more regularly and the last update was in fact today. Any additions to that list would automatically update the 'As of' date, which means that no new lawyers have started practicing in that country.

It may not come as a surprise to note that the lawyer name you mentioned does not appear on that list...

Oh, and any alleged attorney stating in an email that funds are ready to be transferred (especially an email that comes from a yahoo or other free webmail address) is virtually guaranteed (99.9999999999%) to be a scammer, and not a real lawyer in any way whatsoever.

I believe she knew it wasn't real cuz she didn't respond to it but I also think she wanted it to be real.

Everyone wants it to be real :) -- I want to win a lottery, have a mystery relative leave me a fortune, and buy an iPod or iPhone for $20. I'm not greedy, so they could be spread over a week or more ;)

Most people (and I'm glad that your mother is one), most of the time, can distinguish between their desires and their reality.
